Hi everyone!!! Tonight we’re in London staying with our friends from Texas and I’ve had a chance to keep the blog photos coming – I hope you’re enjoying them! Next up on our adventure is photos from Roma!! This was such a highlight of our trip to Italy and we really used up the four days we had there sight seeing and exploring the culture and history of Rome. I know for Eric, the highlight was seeing the Colosseum and we lucked out on another beautiful warm, sunny day! Here are a few highlights for us:
1. We did a Rick Steve’s audio tour off our iPhones for the Colosseum and after purchasing a Roma pass got to skip the lines and go straight in to enjoy on our own pace….2 hours later, I”d say we’re semi-experts now on the history (j/k). It was quite an experience! Thumbs up!
2. Vatican City. On Sunday. It was so neat to happen to be near the area and realizing that at noon the Pope (if in town) gives a blessing from his balcony window! We captured a little video and fortunately they had a big screen tv so we could actually see him since his apartments are so far from St. Peter’s square.
3. The view from St. Peter’s Cathedral! We made it back to Vatican City on Tuesday after the crowds and managed to make our way up to the dome through some of the most claustrophobic stairs I’ve ever seen ….stairs that were definitely too narrow for the likes of men Eric’s size! But, thankfully without the crowds we managed to get to the top and the view of the city was just amazing!
4. The Sistine Chapel….wow. We did the long tour through the Vatican museum and found ourselves packed into the Sistine Chapel with a ton of tourists, but that still didn’t take away from the amazing feeling of seeing Michealangelo’s Creation and The Last Judgement! We had our free audio guides to listen to and really enjoyed just standing there for a while and learning about the process and changes from the Renaissance to the Boroque period of artwork.
5. Fresh. Homemade. Pasta. Lots of it…and more gelato! It was incredible and we found a really neat little ‘to go’ place that made our pasta and sauce to go in a carton that we then took and ate while walking around the Pantheon and Trevi fountain!
6. The rest of Rome!! Spanish Steps, Forum, Pantheon, Trevi Fountain….we pretty much walked the entire city and enjoyed every moment of it!
Eric says Thumbs Down.
I played around with a technique of doing multiple exposures in camera…here are a few around the Forum and Colosseum (straight out of camera!)
And….Eric on the metro. I couldn’t resist. It made me laugh out loud!
The Pope…you know that little guy WAY UP THERE?!?! Those are his apartments and on Sunday’s at noon he gives a blessing.
Inside the Pantheon…it started raining…which was really cool to see the rain coming straight through the dome!
Trevi Fountain! We definitely did the touristy thing and threw our coins in….if you’re on Instagram we made a really cool video!
Another double exposure shot of the skyline of Rome from the Spanish Steps
There was love EVERYWHERE!
Made it back to Vatican City for the museum, Sistine Chapel and a visit into St. Peter’s Cathedral.
Evening light streaming through the beautiful and massive dome, designed by Michaelangelo in St. Peter’s Cathedral
We happend upon Mass taking place at 5pm so I was able to join in!
View from the top of St. Peter’s – incredible!
Looking down into St. Peter’s…it’s absolutely ginormous!
And…..the Vatican Museum’s most interesting area…Sistine Chapel with Michaelangelo’s Creation….where no photos are allowed. Oops! I was able to take one, and I don’t feel bad because the reason you’re ‘not allowed’ is that during the restoration of the Sistine Chapel, a japanese company paid for it and as part of their deal they now have the rights to the photos. Or something similar to that, it’s not because my non flash camera would ruin the artwork!
The rain storm that blew through while we were in the museums!
Hope you enjoyed!! We absolutely loved our 4 days in the city and will definitely be back for the history, culture and FOOD! Have a great week….keep checking Instagram for more up-to date photos as we head to London this weekend! Next up on the blog…Barcelona!
